When we start our colts we like to pony them while we check cows. We put packs on them and carry our lunches and a couple of tools, nothing to crazy. We like doing this because it gives them a chance to get comfortable with trees brushing their sides and things jingling around on them without also having to deal with an entire human on their back. Imagine the sensory overload that horses feel, especially the first time they experience something new! They are not only dealing with their own emotions, but also yours (please, always remember that). That's a lot of emotions bouncing around. We encourage our horses to be confident in us from a very young age and we'd hate to break that confidence because WE are in too much of a hurry. #kaylalewphotography
